{"id":34834,"date":"2022-07-18T14:20:15","date_gmt":"2022-07-18T14:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/?p=34834"},"modified":"2024-12-12T22:23:01","modified_gmt":"2024-12-12T22:23:01","slug":"public-knowledge-urges-congress-to-swiftly-move-new-net-neutrality-bill-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/public-knowledge-urges-congress-to-swiftly-move-new-net-neutrality-bill-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Knowledge Urges Congress To Swiftly Move New Net Neutrality Bill Forward"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/07\/18\/democrats-plan-sweeping-net-neutrality-bill-fcc-majority-stalls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports indicate<\/a> that Senators Ed Markey (D-MA) and Ron Wyden (D-OR), along with Rep. Matsui (D-CA) and other co-sponsors, will soon introduce a bill to reinstate net neutrality and the Federal Communications Commission&#8217;s authority over broadband service. The \u201cNet Neutrality and Broadband Justice Act\u201d would codify the FCC\u2019s authority to classify broadband as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/we-already-knew-broadband-should-be-a-public-utility-the-pandemic-made-it-obvious\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Title II<\/a>\u201d communications service and regulate it as such.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill effectively reverses the unprecedented abdication of authority over broadband that FCC Chairman Pai instigated in the agency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicknowledge.org\/press-release\/fcc-abandons-consumer-protection-responsibility-with-net-neutrality-repeal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2017 repeal<\/a> of its 2015 Open Internet Order that established the <a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/policy\/fcc-open-internet-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">net neutrality rules<\/a> under Chairman Tom Wheeler. Those rules prevented broadband providers from blocking websites, throttling web traffic, or creating \u201cfast lanes\u201d only for those able to pay for prioritization. Prior to Chairman Pai\u2019s abdication, Republican and Democratic Commissions had agreed the FCC had authority over broadband \u2013 the question was just under which title of its statute. The bill also prevents a future-FCC from backtracking on other broadband consumer protections \u2013 fundamental in an increasingly online world. Public Knowledge urges Congress to swiftly pass this bill once introduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following can be attributed to Greg Guice, Director of Government Affairs at Public Knowledge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor over two decades, the FCC had been on the beat trying to protect consumers&#8217; access to a free and open internet. It was only during the Trump administration that the FCC, for the first time, disavowed any authority to fulfill its congressional mandate to ensure all Americans have access to communications services.\u00a0<br><br>\u201cThat abdication of responsibility must be rectified and we are pleased that Senators Markey and Wyden and Representative Matsui are moving to do just that.
