Jim Clyburn, Majority Whip and third-ranking Democrat in the United States House of Representatives.&nbsp;As a national leader, he has championed rural and economic development and many of his initiatives have become law. Emma\u2019s work spans many subjects, including hate speech, terrorist propaganda, and disinformation, and includes legislative advocacy, amicus activity in U.S. courts, and engagement in multistakeholder initiatives and global advocacy campaigns. Much of Emma\u2019s advocacy focuses on the legal and technical systems that govern online communication, with a focus on the capabilities and limitations of machine learning techniques in analyzing user-generated content.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Kyle-K.-Courtney-headshot-1-1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35253\" style=\"width:191px;height:276px\" width=\"191\" height=\"276\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Finally, we presented our Intellectual Property Award to Kyle K. Courtney, a lawyer and librarian serving as the Copyright Advisor at Harvard University, working out of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/osc.hul.harvard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harvard Library&#8217;s Office for Scholarly Communication<\/a>.&nbsp;His work frames the law as the foundation for advancing the mission of all libraries, archives, and cultural institutions to acquire, preserve, maintain, and share the world&#8217;s culture. He works closely with the Harvard community to establish a culture of shared understanding of copyright and related legal issues. His \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/library.harvard.edu\/services-tools\/copyright-first-responders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Copyright First Responders<\/a>&#8221; initiative is in its ninth year and has reached libraries, archives, and cultural institutions across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Siy_Sherwin_January_2019-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35254\" style=\"width:300px;height:217px\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In 2022, we also commemorated the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/sherwin-siy-fellowship-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sherwin Siy<\/a>, a pillar of Public Knowledge for nearly 10 years and a passionate advocate for the openness of information in the digital era. His openness and enthusiasm as a mentor to young advocates left a lasting mark across the entire field. Please help us honor Sherwin Siy\u2019s legacy of activism and mentorship by <a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/sherwin-siy-fellowship-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">supporting the next generation of policy advocates<\/a> through an endowed fellowship in his name. With this fellowship, we intend to build upon Sherwin\u2019s life work and to fundamentally transform how advocates in our field represent the growing diversity within this country.
