{"id":35946,"date":"2023-06-15T13:14:25","date_gmt":"2023-06-15T13:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/?p=35946"},"modified":"2023-06-15T13:14:26","modified_gmt":"2023-06-15T13:14:26","slug":"public-knowledge-joins-more-than-two-dozen-groups-urging-congress-to-abandon-problematic-journalism-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/public-knowledge-joins-more-than-two-dozen-groups-urging-congress-to-abandon-problematic-journalism-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Knowledge Joins More Than Two Dozen Groups Urging Congress To Abandon Problematic \u2018Journalism\u2019 Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today, Public Knowledge joined 24 public interest, consumer advocacy, and civil society groups as well as trade associations, media companies, and others in a <a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/policy\/senate-group-letter-opposing-jcpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> urging Senate leadership not to pass the \u201cJournalism Competition and Preservation Act\u201d (JCPA). The groups argue that the JCPA \u201cis not and cannot be the answer\u201d for solving the crisis in journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public Knowledge contends that the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/public-knowledge-opposes-faulty-journalism-bill-undermining-open-internet-and-free-speech-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Journalism Competition and Preservation Act<\/a>\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/strange-bedfellows-why-advocates-still-oppose-the-jcpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fails<\/a> to support local news, serving only to worsen some of the biggest problems in journalism. Organizations and academics from across the political spectrum have consistently expressed how flawed this so-called journalism bill really is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following can be attributed to Lisa Macpherson, Senior Policy Analyst at Public Knowledge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter three years of debate and opposition from a wide range of stakeholders, industry lobbyists and sponsors have once again <a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/public-knowledge-opposes-faulty-journalism-bill-undermining-open-internet-and-free-speech-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resurrected the JCPA<\/a> to further enrich massive media corporations and powerful broadcasters at the expense of local news and journalists. Longstanding questions about the JCPA\u2019s impact on content moderation, small and independent media, industry consolidation, and copyright law \u2013 as well as the bill\u2019s complete lack of accountability for ensuring the funds actually help support local journalists \u2013 continue to go unaddressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile we recognize <a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/the-free-press-is-a-pillar-of-our-democratic-infrastructure-and-its-crumbling-policymakers-should-support-local-news-in-the-infrastructure-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the crisis in local news<\/a>, the use of an elaborate antitrust exemption like that in the JCPA will only serve to compound the biggest challenges in our news and information landscape: consolidation of power, distance and disengagement of news conglomerate owners from the communities they serve, and the rampant spread of misinformation on the internet.
