Today, the Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai <\/span>circulated<\/a> a \u201cRestoring Internet Freedom\u201d draft Order that would roll back the agency\u2019s 2015 Open Internet Order<\/a>, which created strong net neutrality rules<\/a> that force broadband providers to treat all internet content and services equally.<\/p>\n

The agency\u2019s new proposal downgrades broadband from a \u201ctelecommunications service\u201d under Title II of the Communications Act, to a mere \u201cinformation service.\u201d If adopted at the FCC meeting on December 14, the draft Order will eliminate the existing network neutrality rules (\u201cno blocking, no throttling, and no ‘fast lanes’\u201d) that currently protect the Open Internet. Millions of Americans <\/span>expressed support for these rules<\/a> by submitting comments<\/a> with the FCC leading up to the 2015 Open Internet Order, and millions of Americans have opposed FCC Chairman Pai\u2019s proposal to roll back these rules since he announced it last spring.<\/p>\n

Public Knowledge opposes FCC Chairman Pai\u2019s move to gut these rules, leaving <\/span>consumers<\/a>, small businesses<\/a>, artists<\/a>, students<\/a>, hospital patients<\/a>, low-income families<\/a>, startups<\/a> and entrepreneurs<\/a> unprotected and at the mercy of broadband providers.<\/p>\n

The following can be attributed to Harold Feld, Senior Vice President at Public Knowledge:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor almost 20 years, both Republican and Democratic FCC Chairmen have pledged to protect the right of broadband subscribers to access any lawful content or application, and to prevent the cable and telephone companies that provide the \u2018on ramps\u2019 to the internet from picking winners and losers. Today, for the first time, Chairman Pai proposes to leave internet subscribers completely unprotected by the FCC. Chairman Pai\u2019s radical \u2018Carriers First, Consumers Last\u2019 approach puts broadband subscribers at the mercy of local cable companies whose \u2018innovations\u2019 have more to do with gouging consumers and crushing competition than with providing new services.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
