{"id":37854,"date":"2025-04-10T20:16:09","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T20:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/?p=37854"},"modified":"2025-04-10T20:16:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T20:16:10","slug":"public-knowledge-responds-to-mark-meadors-ftc-confirmation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/public-knowledge-responds-to-mark-meadors-ftc-confirmation\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Knowledge Responds To Mark Meador\u2019s FTC Confirmation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Mark Meador to the Federal Trade Commission, despite President Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/public-knowledge-condemns-trumps-lawless-attack-on-ftc-independence\/\">illegally terminating Democratic Commissioners Rebecca Kelly Slaughter and Alvaro Bedoya<\/a> in violation of both the statute that created the FTC and Supreme Court precedent. Public Knowledge applauds those who voted against Mr. Meador\u2019s nomination due to this unlawful termination that poses a \u201cdirect attack on the independence of an agency that has long served as a cornerstone of consumer protection,\u201d as explained in our <a href=\"https:\/\/nclnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Signed-FTC-Independence-Letter.pdf\">letter<\/a> to Senate leadership. Public Knowledge specifically commends Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), and other Senate Democrats who voted against this nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following can be attributed to Sara Collins, Director of Government Affairs at Public Knowledge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe would like to thank Sens. Schumer, Cantwell, and the rest of the Senate Dems for having the courage to champion an independent FTC by voting \u2018no\u2019 on Mr. Meador\u2019s nomination. In order for the FTC to be effective, it needs to have five <em>independent<\/em> commissioners doing the work.
