Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to restore the Federal Communications Commission\u2019s 2015 Open Internet Order and the agency\u2019s net neutrality rules by passing the \u201cSave the Internet Act\u201d (<\/span>H.R. 1644<\/a>). Chairman Pai\u2019s FCC repealed these rules<\/a> in 2017, ignoring the millions of Americans<\/a> who support net neutrality. Public Knowledge commends the House of Representatives for listening to the American people, who overwhelmingly support net neutrality<\/a> regardless of party, and urges the U.S. Senate to quickly pass the companion bill (S. 682).<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s bipartisan vote by the House of Representatives to pass the Save the Internet Act reflects the overwhelming public consensus that strong net neutrality consumer protections are vital for the internet ecosystem and the digital economy. Millions of Americans have repeatedly told the FCC they want strong net neutrality protections and oversight of broadband providers, and <\/span>polling consistently<\/a> shows more than 80 percent<\/a> of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents support the policies passed by the House today.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Save the Internet Act is consistent with the Congressional Review Act Resolution that <\/span>passed the Senate in 2018 with bipartisan support<\/a>. The legislation restores the FCC\u2019s carefully crafted and narrowly tailored 2015 Open Internet Order. That Order prohibited discriminatory, anti-consumer, and anti-competitive conduct by broadband providers, including the three \u2018bright line\u2019 net neutrality rules: no blocking of lawful internet content, no throttling, and no paid prioritization. Congressional leaders of both parties support these \u2018bright line\u2019 rules, and the Save the Internet Act would enshrine these consumer protections in law and ensure large cable and telecom companies couldn\u2019t lobby the FCC to thwart the will of the public.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdditionally, the Save the Internet Act also ensures the FCC has the tools it needs to promote broadband access and affordability so that all Americans can participate in the digital economy, and that broadband users are not subject to discriminatory or unjust or unreasonable behavior by broadband providers. H.R. 1644 ensures the FCC is the \u2018cop on the beat\u2019 to protect consumers online, promote competition, and make certain that the FCC can close the digital divide and make broadband accessible and affordable for all.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe internet is the essential communications platform for the 21st century and an essential tool for participation in the digital economy. Once enacted, the Save the Internet Act will ensure that broadband users, not cable and telephone companies, drive the content that users can access online, and make certain that artists, content creators, journalists, political activists, candidates, and businesses will be able to reach audiences online without gatekeeper interference.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s bipartisan action in the House reiterates the commitment that Speaker Pelosi, Chairman Pallone, Chairman Doyle, and <\/span>232 House members have to consumer protection, protecting the Open Internet, reining in unchecked corporate influence, and promoting economic opportunity for all. Public Knowledge urges Senate Majority Leader McConnell to quickly bring the Senate companion to H.R. 1644 up for a vote to restore strong net neutrality consumer protections and FCC authority.\u201d<\/p>\n
