The bipartisan bill passed 61-18 and will now return to the Senate before being sent to Governor Jerry Brown to sign or veto. Public Knowledge welcomes the bill and applauds California\u2019s net neutrality activists for urging their state lawmakers to protect consumers over broadband providers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-2143f4f7-7fff-db48-4b0d-2bf4df2ad43f\">The following can be attributed to Chris Lewis, Vice President of Public Knowledge:<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-2143f4f7-7fff-db48-4b0d-2bf4df2ad43f\">\u201cPolicymakers in Washington must not ignore what the California net neutrality bill means. California is the country\u2019s largest state and the world\u2019s fifth largest economy. Through a bipartisan vote, the California State Assembly joins <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/senate-moves-to-restore-fccs-net-neutrality-rules-for-consumers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the U.S. Senate<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicconsultation.org\/united-states\/overwhelming-bipartisan-public-opposition-to-repealing-net-neutrality-persists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">86 percent of Americans<\/a> in supporting strong net neutrality protections. The message is clear: Americans want the internet to remain open and demand strong net neutrality rules to ensure it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-2143f4f7-7fff-db48-4b0d-2bf4df2ad43f\">\u201cAmericans have been without net neutrality rules since June 11 and without an FCC committed to consumer protection over broadband since 2017. In that time we have seen reports of broadband providers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.att.com\/esupport\/article.html#!\/directv\/KM1131836\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">preferring their own content<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/8\/21\/17765682\/verizon-california-throttled-wildfires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">throttling essential traffic<\/a>, and securing <a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/public-knowledge-disappointed-by-ruling-permitting-att-time-warner-mega-merger-to-proceed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more merger approvals<\/a> to strengthen their role as internet gatekeepers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-2143f4f7-7fff-db48-4b0d-2bf4df2ad43f\">\u201cWhile states like California and Washington are doing what they can, all Americans must benefit from an Open Internet. The California legislative fight was not very different from the debate in Washington. Hundreds of cable and telecommunications lobbyists swarmed state legislators and attempted to introduce weaker, inadequate bills. Only through the efforts of grassroots action, consumer advocates, and bold legislators did Californians end up with this strong bill. We need to continue the same fight in Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-2143f4f7-7fff-db48-4b0d-2bf4df2ad43f\">\u201cIt&#8217;s not too late for the House of Representatives and the President to join the majority of Americans and act to restore the FCC\u2019s 2015 net neutrality rules.
